The Office:
The Dean of the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA also serves as Vice Chancellor of Medical Sciences and reports to the Executive Vice Chancellor. In this dual role, the Vice Chancellor/Dean is responsible for conceptualizing, managing implementation, and administration of policy, program and resource allocation for the entire Medical Enterprise. The enterprise consists of the medical school, the UCLA Medical Center-Westwood, the Santa Monica-UCLA Medical Center, the Neuropsychiatric Institute and Neuropsychiatric Hospital, organized research units, centers and institutes, and the UCLA Medical Group. In addition, the Vice Chancellor exercises oversight of the academic programs of the UCLA School of Dentistry.

Responsibilities as Vice Chancellor include:
  • serving as senior advisor to the Chancellor and Executive Vice Chancellor on all issues relating to academic medicine and health care
  • serving as a senior member of the Chancellor's Executive Committee and the Academic Council
  • representing and articulating the goals and mission of the UCLA Medical Enterprise to the Regents of the University of California; the UC Office of the President; other academic medical institutions throughout the United States; and UC legislative offices at the state and national levels
  • developing strategic relationships with public and private constituencies, including elected officials at the federal, state, and local levels, policymakers, and corporate and philanthropic foundations
  • overseeing the budget and exercising responsibility for financial development/fundraising programs and capital development programs of the medical school and the hospitals
  • overseeing outreach services to the community
  • serving as a board member of Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science
Responsibilities as Dean include:
  • providing oversight for all educational, research, and patient care activities of the medical school; recruitment and retention of faculty; and budgetary responsibility for the school.
  • providing direct oversight of 21 clinical and basic science departments
  • providing oversight for six organized research units
  • overseeing eleven large centers and institutes
  • maintaining academic responsibility for ten affiliated academic institutions and major affiliates, including promotions, appointment and organization and evaluation of teaching programs
  • overseeing activities of the Executive Associate Dean and all Senior Associate Deans
