The Vice Dean for Faculty is responsible for faculty appointments, promotions, development and advancement as well as quality of faculty life, including support of David Geffen School of Medicine faculty and academic programs at the School's affiliated institutions throughout the community; and reports to the Vice Chancellor, Health Sciences and Dean, David Geffen School of Medicine (DGSOM).
Major Responsibilities Include:
- rigorous oversight of the appointments and promotions process with responsibility for academic excellence in the broad areas of teaching, research and patient care, ensuring that those key elements are appropriately balanced in the process; in this capacity, responsible for all personnel actions relating to academic appointments, promotions, merit increases, salary and incentive proposals
- ensuring faculty compliance with University-wide and local campus Health Sciences Compensation Plan policy and procedures, including issues related to retention and non-retention of outside income, conflict of interest and constructive receipt
- representation of DGSOM at the Committee on Academic Personnel (CAP) and other relevant Academic Senate committees
- working in close collaboration with the Chairs of the Departments of the DGSOM to address and resolve academic issues and concerns
- leadership and oversight for various School programs and initiatives designed to foster faculty development and advancement
- point person for creating, implementing, and ensuring the success of programs to enhance faculty life, focusing on the needs of DGSOM faculty across the UCLA Health Sciences community, including orientation of faculty and mentoring procedures in each department
- working with faculty in need of mentoring and career development
- nurturing and supporting DGSOM faculty and academic programs at the School's affiliated institutions, ensures that development and advancement initiatives are available to faculty at affiliates, and fosters and facilitates effective communication of School activities and programs to faculty at affiliated institutions
- adjudicates issues of faculty misconduct and the grievance and disciplinary proceedings
- promotes and ensures that diversity considerations play a primary role in faculty search and recruitment processes
- organizes and approves the search committees to fill FTEs and to fill endowed chairs
- oversees faculty housing and loan programs
- works with the Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs in the appointment of faculty to serve on five year review committees
