John C. Mazziotta, M.D., Ph.D., Associate Vice Chancellor, Health Sciences, Executive Vice Dean, David Geffen School of Medicine, Chair and Stark Professor of Neurology

The Executive Vice Dean, who is also Associate Vice Chancellor of Health Sciences, is responsible for maintaining the high quality of research and medical education in the Medical Enterprise. Medical education includes the entire spectrum, including undergraduate medical education, graduate education, and continuing medical education.

Responsibilities include


  • overseeing the positions of Vice Dean for Research, Senior Associate Dean for Medical Education, Senior Associate Dean for Student Affairs and Graduate Medical Education, Senior Associate Dean for Graduate Studies, and Director of the Medical Scientist Training Program
  • organizing master planning activities for school of medicine functions in clinical care, clinical and basic research, and medical and graduate student activities
  • assigning space to departments and individual programs
  • overseeing strategic planning for research buildings under construction, planned new buildings, and renovation, reorganization and reassignment of space in those parts of the existing medical center that will remain after new space is completed
  • developing plans for new buildings for medical education, a medical library, and clinical research
  • overseeing strategic plans for space management
  • overseeing activities associated with faculty scholarship, professionalism, diversity and mentoring
  • overseeing scientific cores which provide equipment and service to faculty and trainees for research endeavors
  • coordinating David Geffen School of Medicine research and educational activities with other schools on campus and with other Schools of Medicine in the UC system.
  • presenting educational and research activities to the Los Angeles community and throughout the nation.
