Biomathematics PhD Program

The Department of Biomathematics provides doctoral training in mathematical and computational biology with the aim of developing creative, fully independent investigators who can initiate research in both applied mathematics and their chosen biomedical specialty. The research interests of our faculty include applications in genetics, population modeling, evolutionary molecular biology, cellular and molecular modeling, transport biophysics, pharmacokinetics, drug treatment optimization, and functional imaging/physiologic modeling. Their associated methodologic research interests includes computational statistics, sequence analysis, optimization theory, medical time series, theoretical biophysics, applied stochastic processes, and compartmental modeling. In addition to core coursework in Biomathematics, the doctoral curriculum provides ample opportunity for further graduate training in applied mathematics, statistics, computer science, engineering, or physics. Students also develop with their advisers a coherent plan for advanced biological or biomedical training that is integrated with their quantitative and research training. Biomathematics is the home department for an NIH Systems and Integrative Biology Training Grant with over two dozen affiliated UCLA faculty members, from over a dozen departments, whose research bridges mathematical modeling and the biological sciences. The affiliated faculty and their laboratories greatly expand opportunities for individualized interdisciplinary training, advising, and research mentoring in biomathematics.
