CIRID: Center for International Research in Disease
David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA

Institute or Center: CIRID: Center for International Research in Disease
Information: The Center for International Research In Disease (CIRID:India) focuses on research and capacity-building educational programs with India. UCLA activities in India include clinical, epidemiologic, translational, laboratory, health services, disease prevention and education and research projects. UCLA disciplines include Biological and Behavioral Sciences, Medicine, Nursing, Public Health, Social Welfare, Arts and more.

CIRID:India facilitates the identification of research topics and suitable Indian collaborators. It provides assistance to UCLA faculty interested to work in India and/or with colleagues coming to UCLA from India for education and training.

CIRID linkages in India include:

  • Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and Department of Health Research of the Ministry of Health (The principal focus is in seven of the 23 institutes???Tuberculosis Research Center, National institute of Epidemiology, National AIDS Research Institute, National Institute of Cholera and Enteric Diseases, National Center for Leprosy and Mycobacterial Diseases, Institute of Cytology and Preventive Oncology and National Institute of Nutrition)
  • Department of Biotechnology of the Ministry of Science and Technology and its research institutes
  • All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi
  • Armed Forces Medical Services and the Armed Forces Medical College (Pune)
  • Central Councils for Research in Traditional Indian Medicine (Ayurveda, Siddha and Homeopathy) of the Department of AYUSH, Ministry of Health
  • Maulana Azad Medical College/Lok Nayak Hospital (New Delhi)
  • Other medical and nursing schools

Training Programs have included MS and PhD degree (Public Health), post-doctoral fellowships for 1-3 years and intensive specialized training for 3-6 months at UCLA with multi-year follow-up on clinical, laboratory and behavioral research projects.

CIRID: India developed from the NIH-funded Center for Interdisciplinary Research in Immunology and Disease (CIRID program) which was initiated at UCLA in 1978. Since 2000, the program has focused on India and the title has changed to emphasize the International content and India context. This program now involves the Departments of Microbiology, Immunology and Molecular Genetics, Medicine, Pediatrics, Pathology, Psychiatry, Psychology, Epidemiology, Health Services and the School of Nursing. While HIV/AIDS has been a major theme in recent years, a widening of the research and education context has begun to include non-communicable diseases, basic biomedical and sociobehavioral sciences. More than 20 UCLA faculty are associated with the Center.
