The core measures a variety of mouse phenotypes related to atherosclerosis, obesity, and diabetes. The facility makes use of Body Composition NMR for precise non-invasive determination of lean and fat body mass using equipment within the campus vivarium so that sequential measurements may be made over the animal's lifespan without leaving the specific-pathogen-free area. Additionally, we use Body Composition Dual-Energy X-ray Absorptiometry (DEXA) to measure fat and bone mineral density in live animals, carcasses, or tissue samples. Blood pressure experiments are carried out via tail cuff determinations using the BP-2000. A Mouse Metabolic Chamber is used to determine metabolic rates of individual animals using measurements of oxygen consumption and carbon dioxide production. In addition to plasma lipid and lipoprotein measurements, our core routinely assesses plasma levels of glucose, insulin, leptin, adiponectin, and paraoxonase.
