Tissue Array Core Facility The UCLA Tissue Array Core Facility provides all the resources necessary to conduct in situ tissue array-based research. A wide variety of tissue types and cell lines may be utilized on the tissue microarray platform. The Tissue Array Core Facility is supported by the Department of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine and by the Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center.
Services
  • Construction of tissue and cell line arrays
  • Tissue microarray sectioning and staining (H&E, Immunohistochemistry & FISH)
  • Histopathologic evaluation of stained tissue microarrays
  • Tissue microarray digital imaging and image analysis
  • Tissue microarray project databasing and statistical analysis
  • Educational sessions

Database-backed Web Application - "TMAtrix" In conjunction with the UCLA Computing Technologies Research Lab (Ctrl), the UCLA Tissue Array Core Facility has developed "TMAtrix", a comprehensive suite of interactive database-backed web applications, including imaging and administrative tools, backed by an Oracle database. The system provides robust and efficient project workflow and is available for core users.

Equipment:
The UCLA Tissue Array Core Facility uses Beecher Instruments tissue arrayers and Olympus and Leica brightfield and fluorescence microscopes. An Applied Imaging digital slide scanning system provides high-resolution capture and analysis of histologic images of tissue microarrays.
Resources:
Tissue sources are primarily provided through the abundant archived formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded human tissue sample collection contained within the Department of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine at UCLA. As a large regional tertiary care and teaching center with surgical pathology case accessions averaging over 30,000 per year, extensive stores of tissues encompassing all organ systems are available for the production of tissue microarrays. In addition, fresh frozen and matched tissues are banked through the department's Tissue Procurement and Histology Core Lab (TPCL).
