In recent years, the use of genetically modified animals to define the function of specific genes and to generate novel animal models has expanded dramatically. This generated the need to interpret new lesions and pathological disorders that are seen in genetically modified mouse. The contribution of a highly trained veterinary pathologist with experience in natural and experimental pathology of the mouse is critical to successfully achieve this objective. In response to these new important needs, the Department of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine recruited Dr Nora Rozengurt, D.V.M., M.Sc, MRCVS, Ph.D., an expert in mouse pathology and created the The Mouse Pathology Core . Dr. Rozengurt who is the Core Director, has 20 years experience working in natural and experimental mouse pathology. She has worked with a large variety of mouse tissues as attested by her publications. The Mouse Pathology service, running at UCLA for over seven years, offers mouse pathology expertise to the UCLA scientific community.

Services provided by the The Mouse Pathology Core

The Core offers histopathological examination of mouse tissues carried out by the Core Director, a written report detailing any findings and further advise on the possible interpretation of any pathological changes found. Photography, help with writing descriptions and legends for publication or grant applications can be given to the investigator. The Core can also offer training/tuition/guidance on the most appropriate means of carrying out pathological studies using mice, on the post-mortem examination of rodents, obtaining and preserving tissues according to the requirements of the project. In collaboration with the Tissue Procurement and Histology Core Laboratory (TPCL), a coordinated and cost-effective pathology source for a variety of research-related services, the Mouse Pathology Core offers high quality routine mouse tissue processing, embedding, staining, immunohistochemistry, electron microscopy, microdissection and morphometry under the direct supervision of the Core Director.
